Hygiene

Brushing your teeth twice a day with toothpaste is essential during orthodontic treatment.

Waterpick

Hydropulsators or dental jets are used as a complement to tooth brushing. They are used to massage the gums in the event of redness or swelling. They are indispensable for patients with orthodontic appliances. However, their action is insufficient to loosen plaque bacteria, and in no way replaces tooth brushing.

Mouthwash

It’s important to rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after brushing, and also after meals if you’re unable to brush.

Demineralization

Caution! Demineralization sounds serious, and it is!

It usually occurs when plaque is not sufficiently removed during orthodontic treatment. White spots form on the enamel around the braces. Due to surface demineralization, enamel density and quality are affected.

This is a sign that the acid from the bacteria has begun to dissolve the enamel, which then takes on an opaque white color. This will be an area more prone to decay, and you’ll need to keep an eye on it regularly. White spots won’t disappear on their own, so be vigilant. Brush and floss regularly, and avoid soft drinks!
