General information

Here's some general information about your braces:

  • Avoid hard, sticky foods such as licorice, caramels, chewing gum, hard candies, ice cubes, etc. These can damage or detach the units. These foods can damage or loosen appliances. Raw apples and vegetables should be cut into small pieces.
  • After meals, brush your teeth and braces thoroughly, taking care to clean under the wires.
  • Check your equipment regularly for breakage or loose casing. Call our office to make an appointment if this is the case.
  • Do not play with the wires, as this may bend or twist them. This could result in displacement or breakage.
  • If you notice a wire or fastener out of place, please call us.
  • If your tongue, cheeks and lips are irritated, use orthodontic wax, which is also available in pharmacies.
  • Following the installation of new equipment, a period of adaptation is required.
  • For the first few days after braces are fitted, it’s normal to have a little difficulty eating. You’ll need to eat softer, more liquid foods. Please be patient! In a few days, you’ll be able to eat many foods again.
  • It’s normal to have a surplus of saliva at installation and a few days after fitting new appliances, but this is temporary.
  • A taste of plastic (appliance) or metal (with the pins) may appear, but this will disappear in 1 or 2 days.
  • For the first few days after the appliance is fitted, pronunciation may be slightly disturbed. In any case, this is only a transitory phenomenon. Reading aloud can help you get used to your device.
