Adults over 16

After the age of 16, girls and boys reach the end of their period of active skeletal growth and consider themselves adults.

There is no age limit for orthodontic treatment. In this situation, only the position of the teeth can be changed. To have an effect on the ratio of the jaws, it is necessary to consider a surgical approach.

Before

After

Specific orthodontic treatment for adults:

  • Jaw growth is already complete.
  • All permanent teeth are erupted and their growth cannot be influenced.
  • Patients often have teeth with fillings, crowns, gum disease or missing teeth, all of which can influence orthodontic treatment.
  • Gums often need extra care before, during and after ortho treatment.
  • If patients experience pain in their jaws when opening or closing their mouths, this requires a special examination before orthodontic treatment begins.
  • In general, tooth movement is slower than in children, and this extends the treatment time to around 30 months.
  • In people with a history of gum disease, black triangles may appear between the teeth at the end of orthodontic treatment, requiring additional cosmetic dental treatment.
  • For best results, orthodontic treatment should be completed with additional procedures using esthetic crowns or veneers.
